“What other professionals are so consistently asked to work for nothing?”

“The job is to perform in a ‘music’ festival. It is a highly skilled and high profile job which, to be done well, requires an enormous amount of preparation, years of experience and involves the use of a great deal of specialised and expensive equipment which the performer will be expected to provide (and that’s just the instruments).¬†However this ‘music’ festival will NOT BE PAYING the musicians. It will be the applicants’ honour to work for this fabulous event.

Were this a job application for any other trade, potential applicants would read the terms, roll around laughing and walk away. What other professionals are so consistently asked to work for nothing? How have artists been brainwashed into thinking this is acceptable?

Don’t work for free. You won’t be ‘showcased’. You’re more likely to get serious ‘exposure’ by walking naked on Dartmoor in January. What you will be is exploited. Value yourself more highly. WITHOUT MUSICIANS THERE WOULD BE NO MUSIC FESTIVAL.”
