I’ve just this week performed at an established fringe festival, in a new venue. I was aware that there were apparently ‘no funds’ available and their way of saying thanks for playing was a free festival entry and artist camping. But in the initial stages I really did try to negotiate some level of recompense to cover my musician fees and travelling which were not accepted and in the end I had to decide whether it was worth performing to potential new ears for free.
This time I decided to go for it but was saddened by the whole affair – fancy putting a programme together of artists without funds?! Perhaps other artists on other stages were paid, or at the premium times of the day – who knows. It’s quite unprofessional and cost us a fair amount to do the gig without it being honoured financially by the organisers.
